Overview¶
Occasional self-drive where it’s safer and more useful than buses / taxis / drivers — not a default for every city day. Research is brainstorming; confirm prices, insurance, and pico y placa on the booking date.
Pages¶
| Focus | When a car helps | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Colombia | Mountain day trips, coffee region roaming; usually not Bogotá/Medellín city centres | Providers + national tips |
| → Bogotá | Rarely | Bogotá |
| → Coffee region | Often yes | Coffee region |
| → Medellín | Day trips (Guatapé, etc.), not El Poblado loops | Medellín |
| → Cali | Limited | Cali |
| → Caribbean coast | Selective | Caribbean coast |
| Mexico | Day trips from CDMX / Yucatán routes | Light notes |
| Brazil | Only if friend-city logistics need it | Light notes |
Defaults (all countries)¶
- Prefer daylight driving on unfamiliar mountain roads; avoid night long-hauls.
- Take full / upgraded CDW unless credit-card coverage is verified in writing for Colombia / LatAm (many cards exclude or limit).
- Photograph the car thoroughly at pickup/return (tyres, glass, underbody if visible).
- Confirm kit legal contents in Colombia (triangles, extinguisher, jack, etc.) before leaving the lot — expat advice repeatedly flags this (Expat.com thread).
- Ride apps + intercity buses remain better for pure city hops — see Internal flights & transport.
