Travel insurance¶
Colombia does not require proof of travel insurance for entry, but you should still buy cover before leaving the UK. Private hospitals often want proof of ability to pay; evacuation from remote coast / mountains is the expensive risk, not a routine city clinic visit (FCDO — foreign travel insurance; FCDO — Colombia).
This page is research for buying a policy, not a quote. Limits, activity lists, and FCDO wording change — verify on the provider’s site and policy wording before paying.
What this trip needs cover for¶
Rough priority order for this itinerary (cities + possible Caribbean seaside + optional second country):
| Scenario | Why it matters here | What to check on the policy |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency medical + hospital | No free NHS-style care for visitors; cities are fine privately, bills still add up | High medical limit (UK policies often £5–10m+); 24/7 assistance number |
| Medical evacuation / repatriation | Remote coast, park trails, islands — getting to a proper hospital or home can dwarf treatment | Evacuation included (not optional waffle); helicopter/air ambulance when medically needed |
| Cutting short / curtailment | Illness, serious incident, or needing to fly home early | Curtailment + “get you home if you can’t use original ticket” |
| Cancellation (before departure) | Flights + stays already booked; soft return 2–4 Sep | Cancel for named reasons; buy soon after booking flights for this to be useful |
| Theft / baggage | Phone, camera, cards — cities + beach towns | Phone/gadget limits (often low unless you add gadget cover); proof of ownership |
| Activities | Tayrona hiking, snorkelling, possible boat days, dance (low risk), occasional car hire | Hiking / snorkelling / scuba depth listed; adventure pack if needed |
| Multi-country (optional) | Beyond Colombia — Mexico / Brazil / etc. | Destination region = Worldwide (or list every country); transit countries too |
Separate from travel insurance: rental-car CDW / excess cover is usually bought with the hire desk or a specialist car-hire excess product — see Driving. Credit-card “travel insurance” and GHIC/EHIC do not replace a proper policy for Colombia (GHIC is EU state care only).
FCDO regions — the cover-killer¶
Most UK insurers exclude travel against FCDO advice. If you go somewhere FCDO says “against all but essential travel” (or “against all travel”), claims for that part of the trip are often refused even if the rest of Colombia is fine.
Fine for typical tourist cover (as of FCDO update 4 Aug 2026 — re-check before buy): Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, coffee region, Cartagena, Santa Marta / Taganga / Tayrona tourist sectors, San Andrés / Providencia, and Capurganá (explicit exception inside Chocó).
Treat carefully / confirm in writing with the insurer:
- Sapzurro and other Darién bays not named in the Capurganá exception — Capurganá is carved out of the Chocó “against all but essential” zone; neighbouring spots may still sit inside the restricted wording. Don’t assume the Capurganá exception covers the walk/boat to Sapzurro.
- Wider Chocó (except Quibdó, Nuquí, Bahía Solano, Capurganá), many border strips, parts of Cauca / Putumayo / etc. — not on this trip’s core plan; stay out unless you’ve checked both FCDO and the policy.
Sign up for FCDO Colombia email alerts and re-read the map before booking Capurganá/Sapzurro or any border hop.
How to buy (practical)¶
- Decide destinations for the insured dates: Colombia-only vs Colombia + Mexico/Brazil/…
- Pick single-trip Worldwide (or “rest of the world including USA” only if you need USA — usually more expensive and unnecessary for this plan).
- Match trip dates to the full window (depart UK → return UK), including soft return 2–4 Sep slack if you’ll buy refundable extras later.
- Declare pre-existing conditions (physical and mental) — non-disclosure can void claims (FCDO guidance).
- Tick every activity you might do (snorkel, dive depth, trekking altitude). Tayrona / coffee hikes are usually “standard hiking”; scuba often needs a depth limit or pack.
- Save PDF policy + emergency phone offline; share with someone at home.
- Buy soon after locking flights if you want cancellation cover for those tickets.
Colombia entry itself doesn’t ask for a policy PDF at the border; keep it for hospitals and assistance lines.
Italian / EU citizenship (London-based)¶
You hold Italian and UK citizenship and live in London (Personal context). For travel insurance that usually does not unlock a meaningfully different or cheaper Colombia policy by itself.
What actually matters is country of residence, not which passport you wave at the airport. Insurers ask where you normally live, have a permanent address, and can be repatriated to for ongoing care. True Traveller states this explicitly: passport nationality does not matter; pick the country you actually reside in (True Traveller FAQ; UK policy wording vs EEA / Europe wording).
| Path | When it’s valid | Effect on options / cost |
|---|---|---|
| Buy as UK resident (default) | London is home; NHS / UK GP access; repatriation to UK | Use the UK shortlist below. Italian citizenship alone does not change UK premiums. |
| Buy as Italian / EU resident | Not available for this trip — citizenship only, no Italian residence | Italian-market products (Heymondo, AXA Italia, etc.) stay closed; don’t mis-declare residence |
| TEAM / EHIC / Tessera sanitaria UE | EU state care only | Useless in Colombia (and no substitute for repatriation). Keep for any EU transit/stop, not for this trip’s medical plan. |
Practical takeaway: quote and buy on the UK-resident path. Dual citizenship helps entry/visa flexibility, not insurance pricing. SafetyWing / World Nomads also ask residence — select United Kingdom.
Providers that cover Colombia¶
All of the following market cover for Colombia (or worldwide including Colombia). Default eligibility below assumes UK residence. “Operates in Colombia” means you’re covered while travelling there, not a local Colombian retail network. Always confirm destination + government-advice wording in the quote flow.
UK mainstream (single trip / annual)¶
Good default path if you want cancellation + medical + baggage in one UK-regulated package. Several appear in Which? travel insurance tables (subscription) as Best Buys depending on tier — use Which?/MoneyHelper as a second opinion, not as the only filter.
| Provider | Fit for this trip | Notes / sources |
|---|---|---|
| InsureandGo | Strong all-rounder; multi-country South America itineraries | Explicit Colombia / South America pages; 50+ activities standard; extreme-sports add-on; FCDO check required (South America hub) |
| Columbus Direct | Competitive for younger / backpack-length trips; Globetrotter-style long trips | Often compared with InsureandGo for long-haul; verify max trip days vs your dates |
| Holidaysafe | Colombia-specific marketing; sports-heavy policies | States they do not cover trips against FCDO advice — same rule as peers |
| Staysure | If medical screening / age is a factor | Which? often rates higher medical tiers well; run a quote either way |
Also useful directories (not insurers themselves): MoneyHelper travel insurance, ABI choosing cover.
Adventure / backpacker specialists¶
| Provider | Fit for this trip | Notes / sources |
|---|---|---|
| True Traveller | UK or EU residents (incl. Italy); long trips; activity packs | Passport irrelevant — choose real residence. UK vs Europe = different policy booklets. £10m medical/repatriation marketed; Adventure / Extreme packs for altitude / deeper diving (trekking) |
| World Nomads (UK) | Single trip up to 365 days across multiple countries; activity tiers | Standard vs Explorer (£5m / £10m medical on UK site); 150+ activities with some add-ons; can buy while already abroad (waiting periods may apply) |
Flexible “nomad” medical (optional second look)¶
| Provider | Fit for this trip | Notes / sources |
|---|---|---|
| SafetyWing Nomad Insurance | Easy multi-country medical if dates/countries stay fluid | Essential plan covers most countries including Colombia, Mexico, Brazil; excludes a short sanctions list (not those three) (coverage help). Weaker or different cancellation / baggage story than a classic UK holiday policy — compare side-by-side; not a drop-in replacement if you mainly want cancel-for-flights cover |
Emerald Life / similar also market Colombia policies to UK travellers; fine to quote, but prioritise the table above first unless screening pushes you to a specialist medical broker (BIBA travel medical directory via FCDO guidance).
Optional: Mexico, Brazil, or other countries¶
If Beyond Colombia becomes real:
- Buy (or amend) a Worldwide single-trip policy that lists every country you’ll enter, including airport transits if you’ll leave the sterile area.
- Re-check FCDO for that country the same day you buy (Mexico, Brazil, …).
- Hurricane / rainy-season weeks (Mexico Caribbean late Aug) → check natural-disaster / curtailment wording.
- Prefer one policy for the whole journey over stacking separate Colombia-only + Mexico-only policies (gaps at borders are easy to create).
- Hurricane window: late Aug → early Sep is peak Atlantic season — prefer Brazil / inland Mexico / stay-Colombia over Yucatán coast weeks (Beyond Colombia priority); if any Caribbean Mexico days remain, check natural-disaster / curtailment wording.
True Traveller / World Nomads / InsureandGo / Columbus all advertise multi-country or worldwide trips; SafetyWing is built for country-hopping medical cover. Quote the same dates on 2–3 of them and pick on wording, not logo.
Suggested shortlist for quotes¶
Run the same itinerary through at least two of (as UK resident):
- InsureandGo or Columbus — baseline UK holiday policy with cancellation.
- True Traveller or World Nomads — if adventure activities / long single trip matter.
- SafetyWing — only if you want flexible medical-first cover and still understand gaps vs (1).
Don’t buy the cheapest premium if medical evacuation or FCDO exclusions are fuzzy.
Open checklist¶
- Lock insured countries + dates (Colombia-only vs + beyond).
- Confirm Capurganá (and any Sapzurro idea) against current FCDO + insurer email/chat.
- Quote as UK resident: InsureandGo or Columbus + True Traveller or World Nomads.
- Declare conditions; add gadget cover if phone/camera value exceeds baggage sub-limits.
- Save policy PDF + 24/7 number offline; note on Safety.
- Car hire: separate CDW decision (Driving).
