Medellín¶
Inside the city: usually skip the rental. Metro / cable / apps beat traffic + parking + pico y placa. Expats who drive here constantly still tell visitors: rent for out of town, not for El Poblado errands (Expat.com, Colombia Move).
When a car helps¶
- Day trip to Guatapé / Piedra del Peñol (flexibility vs packed tourist buses)
- Overnight toward Jardín or other Antioquia towns
- Pickup at José María Córdova (MDE) for a countryside loop, drop back at MDE or a city desk
Mountain roads: daylight, defensive driving, watch motos.
Providers¶
- Localiza — airport lobby presence + large yard; repeatedly named “most legit / straightforward” on Tripadvisor/expat threads for Medellín visitors (Tripadvisor, Expat.com).
- Sixt — MDE + El Poblado; international pricing; own site shows ~4.1/5 from their customer survey (vendor data) (Sixt Medellín).
- Europcar (El Poblado) — at least one long positive traveler report (full insurance prepaid, no upsell) — anecdote only (Tripadvisor).
- Boutique locals (e.g. marketing sites for “Exotic” and similar): possible, but thinner independent review trail — only if Live quotes + recent Google branch reviews look clean.
Pico y placa¶
Applies weekdays on rotating last digits (confirm current semester with the desk). Fine can land on the card later. Restriction is about circulating in the urban area during banned hours — leaving for Guatapé on a free day/window is the usual pattern (Renting Colombia explainer).
