Overview¶
Brainstorming for leaving Colombia earlier and continuing elsewhere before flying home — not a booked plan. Promote anything that becomes real onto the Itinerary and Flights.
Why this section exists: Colombian historical / archaeology sites researched so far (Historical / Archaeology) are not compelling enough to reshape the trip around. Worth keeping Museo del Oro (and maybe a light day trip) in Bogotá, but not carving multi-day detours for San Agustín / Tierradentro / Ciudad Perdida / Chiribiquete. That frees days — either for more Colombia dance/nature, or for another country.
Candidates¶
| Country | Role (sketch) | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Mexico | Archaeology / culture density | Strong inland option in Aug |
| Brazil | Friend visit + Southeast weather | City TBD |
| Peru | Andes archaeology | Great Aug weather, staged-tourism risk |
| Guatemala | Maya + colonial | Rainy season, messier logistics |
| Ecuador | Close hop, colonial highlands | Mild archaeology vs Mexico |
| Stay in Colombia | No second country | Dance / nature / seaside |
Weather notes on each country page are seasonal averages for late August → early September — not forecasts. Cite sources on the page; verify closer to travel.
Priority under hurricane season¶
Your leftover window sits in the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season (most activity mid-August–mid-October; climatological peak around 10 Sep — NOAA NHC climatology). Late Aug → early Sep return window should steer which Beyond Colombia branch to price first — not whether to travel at all.
Prioritize (weather-robust for this calendar):
- Brazil (esp. Southeast: São Paulo / Rio) — outside the Atlantic hurricane basin; August is mild Southeast winter / drier. Friend visit still the real unlock; weather is a bonus, not a blocker.
- Stay in Colombia — cities, coffee, Cali dance, Andes. No need to fly into a hurricane corridor. Caribbean seaside is rainy/green season and can see tropical waves, but you’re not locking a Yucatán resort week to a Sep peak.
- Mexico inland — Mexico City / Oaxaca (and similar highland culture bases). Rainy-season showers, not Atlantic landfall risk. Strong archaeology/culture fit.
- Peru / Ecuador highlands — no hurricanes; Aug is often good dry-season Andes weather. Worth pricing only if the culture/archaeology itch beats Brazil friend-time or Mexico City density.
Deprioritize for this window (storm / coast risk):
- Mexico Caribbean / Yucatán beach weeks (Cancún, Tulum, Cozumel, Puerto Morelos reef strip) — hottest hurricane-probability months; flights/boats/hotels get messy if a storm tracks west. Inland Mexico still fine; seaside Mexico only if you accept disruption risk (cenotes inland of Mérida/Valladolid are more resilient than island reef days).
- Any plan that needs a Caribbean beach to justify the second country — do that swim in Colombia seaside instead, or skip beach and pick Brazil / inland Mexico / stay.
Middle / other caveats:
- Guatemala — not a classic hurricane-landfall destination like the Yucatán strip, but late Aug is still rainy season (mud, washed-out roads). Lower storm priority than Cancún; weaker weather fit than Peru/Brazil SE.
- Insurance: buy as UK resident (Italian citizenship only — no Italian residence). If a Mexico coast day creeps in, check natural-disaster / curtailment wording (Travel insurance).
Practical order to price first: Brazil (if Erika city works) ≈ stay-Colombia / Colombia seaside → Mexico City±Oaxaca → Peru/Ecuador → Yucatán coast last.
Timing & return window¶
| Anchor | Date | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Arrive Bogotá | 18 or 19 Aug 2026 | Before Welcome Event Thu 20, 5–10 pm; wedding Fri 21, 3 pm→midnight at El Retiro de San Juan |
| UK summer bank holiday (England / Wales / NI) | Mon 31 Aug 2026 | Prefer not landing in London on or just before this weekend rush |
| Working return window | 2–4 Sep 2026 | Soft — pick exact day when comparing return fares vs itinerary |
| Trip length if return ~3 Sep | ~16–17 nights from 18 Aug | Longer than the original “~2 weeks” sketch |
Return date will firm up when shopping return flights against a clearer route (Colombia only vs Colombia + another country). In principle: come back after the Aug 31st bank holiday.
Soon: start looking at internal Colombia flights, any Colombia → next country hop, and the return to London in parallel — they constrain each other.
What must not get lost¶
- Wedding + soft landing in Bogotá stays fixed (arrive 18/19, Welcome Thu 20 eve, wedding Fri 21 at El Retiro de San Juan — Wedding).
- Dance (especially a Cali block) is still a core trip goal — see Personal context. Cutting Colombia short only makes sense if dance is already satisfied or the next country also serves that goal.
- Preference: historic places without over-staged bucket-list tourism.
- Swimming / clear water: see Seaside (orthogonal to “which country for archaeology/friends,” but may tip Colombia coast vs Mexico Yucatán).
Sketch: how days might split¶
Illustrative only — not a schedule.
- Colombia core (must): Bogotá wedding block → coffee → Cali (Medellín skipped).
- Optional compress: drop archaeology multi-day legs (already leaning that way); exit Colombia after Cali rather than adding filler coast.
- After Cali: home in the 2–4 Sep window (or earlier), or a short Europe rest (e.g. Greece) for easy beach chill — see WIP → After Cali. Or a Colombia Caribbean seaside / Beyond Colombia branch only if energy remains.
- Or: spend freed days only on a longer Cali dance block, then fly home.
Open questions¶
- After wedding + preferred Colombia dance/nature stops, how many days are actually left before a 2–4 Sep London landing?
- Is Cali still non-negotiable, or can Medellín (+ maybe Mexico City / Brazil socials) cover the dance goal?
- First branch to price under hurricane-season priority: Brazil (if friend city works) ≈ stay / seaside Colombia → inland Mexico → Peru/Ecuador → Yucatán coast last (see Priority under hurricane season).
- Brazil: confirm city + whether late Aug / early Sep works for hosting / meeting up.
- One-way Colombia → next country + separate return to London vs open-jaw — compare when searching fares.
- Passport / entry / insurance implications of adding a second country — see Logistics → Travel insurance (Worldwide policy; re-check FCDO per country).
- Health: any extra vaccines or altitude notes if Mexico City / Oaxaca / Andes / Brazil appear — check against Health.
