Coffee region

Strongest case for a rental on this trip if roaming beyond a single walkable town (Salento / Filandia + fincas + viewpoints + hot springs) on your own clock. Main roads are mostly paved but mountainous (fog, trucks, motorbikes, tight bends) — daylight only (Colombia Uncharted, Latitude Adjustment).

Inside Salento or Filandia centres you don’t need a car (walk + jeep Willys for Cocora). Parking on cobbles is tight (Colombia Uncharted).

Pickup hubs

One Trustpilot renter reported a smooth Localiza Pereira hire (slow digital signing, no other issues); another described a Pereira tire/pressure warning ignored at handover then a roadside puncture — inspect tyres yourself (Trustpilot Localiza).

Residents doing coffee-zone road trips repeatedly name Localiza as their go-to (Latitude Adjustment).

Vehicle

Compact is fine for Pereira ↔ Salento paved main road; higher clearance / small SUV is wiser if you’ll take Cocora access or muddy finca tracks in rainy weeks (undercarriage damage is usually on you) (AirportCarHub Pereira).

Alternatives if you skip the rental

Jeeps, busetas, and private drivers cover Salento–Cocora–Filandia without self-drive stress — cheaper mental load if only doing the classic loop once (Colombia Uncharted).
