Peru¶
Strong archaeology + Andes — but Machu Picchu packaging is exactly the staged tourism to avoid. Only deepen if Mexico/Brazil are out or a specific non-MP route appears (e.g. Lima + north coast / Arequipa without the classic circuit).
Attach to Colombia¶
Longer / often pricier hop from Colombia than Mexico or Brazil Southeast.
Weather in August — good time?¶
Excellent for the Andes; mediocre for Lima fog; peak crowds at famous sites.
August is Andean dry season (roughly May–Sep): clear days in Cusco / Sacred Valley (~15–20°C by day, near freezing nights at altitude), great for hiking — and peak tourist season for Machu Picchu / Inca Trail (prices + crowds up; permits sell out early) (Packzup, Bookmundi). Lima often sits under grey coastal garúa fog in August — mild but dull.
Bottom line: Weather-wise, August is one of the best months for highland Peru — the trade-off is crowds/staging at the famous sites, which fights this trip’s preferences. Coastal swimming is a weak fit for clarity preferences in this window (foggy Lima coast; see Seaside for clearer alternatives elsewhere).
