Colombia¶
Self-drive is useful for countryside and multi-stop days; usually a hassle inside big cities (traffic, parking, pico y placa). Regional pages:
Broader “should I?” framing: BESABINE — renting a car in Colombia, Things to Do in Colombia — car rental.
Providers (research log)¶
Prices and fleets change — treat figures in blogs as unconfirmed. Prefer checking the company app/site + recent Google/Trustpilot reviews for the specific branch (airport vs city).
Localiza — LatAm “local” default (not Hertz/Avis)¶
Brazilian-founded, largest LatAm network; strong Colombia footprint (airports + cities), often recommended by residents/expats as the practical alternative to international desks (Colombia Move Localiza guide, Expat.com, Latitude Adjustment coffee road trip, Tripadvisor Medellín thread).
Why travelers pick it over Hertz/Budget/Sixt: denser network (one-way pickups more realistic), app-led booking, and blogs claiming materially lower daily rates than US/EU brands for similar cars — verify live quotes; don’t lock itinerary to a blog’s COP numbers (Colombia Move, Reporte Colombia overview).
Review caveats (safe enough with eyes open): Trustpilot and Spanish review sites are mixed. Positive: clean/newer cars, smooth Pereira pickups, helpful staff when things go right. Negative patterns that show up repeatedly: aggressive insurance upsells, disputes over damage / extra days, holiday closures despite confirmation, pico y placa confusion at Bogotá counters, slow roadside help (Trustpilot Localiza, Agencias de Viajes — Bogotá opinions, Reporte Colombia). Verdict for this trip: reasonable first choice among non-Hertz options if you do a full walkaround, take cobertura total (or equivalent), and read the branch reviews for your pickup city — not a blank cheque.

International brands (Hertz, Budget, Avis, Sixt, Europcar)¶
Present at major airports; usually more expensive. Sixt publishes Medellín airport + El Poblado locations (~4.1/5 on their own survey page — treat as vendor-sourced) (Sixt Medellín). Europcar El Poblado got at least one detailed positive Tripadvisor report (prepaid full insurance, no upsell pressure) — single anecdote, not a survey (Tripadvisor). Some writers claim Hertz Colombia inventory overlaps Localiza fleets at a markup — unconfirmed here; compare quotes side by side (Colombia Move).
Smaller / boutique locals¶
Harder to vet from abroad. Examples that surface in search (e.g. Medellín “Exotic Rent a Car” marketing pages) lack the same volume of independent long-form reviews as Localiza. Rule of thumb: if the only glowing copy is the company’s own blog, or the desk wants cash / vague insurance, skip. If using a small firm: prepaid via a major aggregator with buyer protection, physical contract, credit-card deposit, and recent Google reviews naming that branch.
Aggregators (Discover Cars, etc.) appear in traveler guides as a way to compare desks — still inspect the operating company name on the voucher (BESABINE).
Documents & insurance (tourists)¶
Typical desk ask: passport, home driving licence, credit card in the main driver’s name, minimum age often 21–23 (SUV sometimes higher). An International Driving Permit is widely recommended as a translation for police/desks even when a UK/EU licence is legally usable for short tourist stays — confirm current practice with the rental firm (Expat Focus — Colombia driving, AirportCarHub Pereira notes).
Full coverage repeatedly recommended by people who drive here a lot (tyres/glass often excluded from basic CDW — ask explicitly) (Expat.com).
Pico y placa¶
Weekday plate restrictions in Bogotá, Medellín, Cali (and others) apply to rentals — no tourist exemption. Schedules rotate; fines can hit the card later. Ask the desk which days your plate is banned and plan day trips outside the restricted window, or leave the city before restriction hours (Renting Colombia / Localiza corp explainer, Things to Do in Colombia).
Open questions¶
- Compare live Localiza vs Sixt/Hertz quotes for Pereira (coffee) and MDE (Guatapé day).
- Confirm UK licence + optional IDP acceptance at chosen desk.
- Credit-card CDW: does my card cover Colombia hire cars? (Often no — verify.)
