Brazil¶
Only if Beyond Colombia → Brazil becomes real. Clear-water quality depends on friend’s city — confirm before booking seaside days.
Note
Italian friend Erika lives in Brazil — that’s the main reason Brazil is on this list. Confirm where she is (and whether late Aug / early Sep works for her) before treating seaside days (Rio, Bonito, etc.) as real.
Locations (conditional)¶
Rio de Janeiro beaches (Copacabana / Ipanema)¶
August = Southeast winter: pleasant city weather, sea cooler than Dec–Mar; urban beaches are not San Andrés–level crystal, but fine for a dip when the water looks clear that day (Guide to Brazil).
- How to reach: Fly into GIG or SDU; beaches are city neighborhoods (metro/bus/taxi from Centro / Zona Sul). From Colombia, typically 1 connection, ~8–12+ h door-to-door (verify).
- Suggested stay: 3–5 nights if Rio is the friend base (city + beach), not a pure swim pilgrimage.
- Internationals / meeting people: Very high foreigner density. Hostel neighborhoods (e.g. Santa Teresa, parts of Copacabana/Botafogo — pick by recent reviews) make meeting people easy; beach days alone are more anonymous. Good social fit if the friend visit is Southeast.
Visitor reviews (critical summary)
Verdict for this trip: Great city + beach social days if Rio is the friend base — not a clear-Caribbean swim pilgrimage. Water quality and safety awareness vary by day / posto.
What people like: Iconic urban beaches; high international density; easy metro/bus access; winter (Aug) city weather often pleasant for walking (Guide to Brazil).
What people criticize: Not crystal reef water; occasional pollution advisories after heavy rain; pickpocketing / phone theft on crowded sands; Copacabana can feel more tourist- hustle than Ipanema; waves/currents need respect — swim between flags.
Bottom line: Swim when the water looks clean that day; treat beaches as urban social space, not San Andrés clarity.
Other clear-water ideas (only if geography fits)¶
- Bonito — famous clear-river snorkeling in dry season (August often excellent visibility). Worth a dedicated section with photos if it’s reachable from the friend’s city; otherwise skip for this trip length. Internationals: some, but more Brazilian domestic tourism than Rio.
- Northeast reef beaches / Fernando de Noronha — clearer water possible; extra flights — only if the friend is already there.
- Amazon — poor fit for clear readable swimming.
Open question¶
- Friend’s city → nearest clear-water day trip (beach, river, or none)? Then expand that place with full Maps + photos + reach/stay like the Rio section.
