Caribbean coast

Relevant if the seaside / Santa Marta–Tayrona branch wins time from dance or Beyond Colombia.

Santa Marta / Tayrona

  • Park access: many Tayrona sectors are walk / authorized transport / boat — a rental helps to trailheads or Neguanje, not as a drive-through of the park.
  • City driving in Santa Marta is doable but not magical; theft-from-car risk means empty cabin + paid parking.
  • For swimming days at Playa Cristal-style spots, boat / tour often beats wrestling a hire car.

Providers: Localiza / internationals at Santa Marta airport when that branch is real — compare then; no special boutique researched yet.

Cartagena

Old city is walkable; parking is painful. Rosario Islands are boats, not self-drive. Renting a car in Cartagena is low priority unless touring inland Bolívar.

San Andrés / Providencia

Small islands — motos / golf carts / taxis beat a mainland-style hire for most visitors. Skip car rental unless a specific need appears; clarity swimming doesn’t require a car (Seaside → Colombia).

Road caution

Long Caribbean coastal highways and some inland connectors have variable security reputations — check current guidance before a multi-hour night drive; prefer daylight and main routes (BESABINE, Safety).
