Prices & cost of living

Why Colombia can feel surprisingly expensive to a UK visitor in 2025–26 — and what ballpark numbers to expect — so tourist quotes (hotels, tours, dance privates) aren’t judged against a 2018 “dirt cheap LatAm” memory.

Cross-check live FX; figures below are order-of-magnitude from cited sources, not a quote sheet. Dance-school prices live on the city dance pages (e.g. Dance → Cali).

Why it feels expensive (mechanics)

Several things stack; any one of them can make a COP price look “London-ish” in your head:

  1. Stronger peso vs USD (and therefore vs GBP) — fewer pesos per hard currency at the ATM → the same menu / hotel / class costs more in pounds than in the weak-peso years. The City Paper Bogotá (2026 reporting) puts the peso near multi-year highs vs the dollar and spells out the tourist hit.
  2. Domestic cost inflation — wages, energy, fuel/tolls feed into hotels, transport, and service businesses. Same City Paper piece: large minimum-wage jump, energy surcharges, higher operating costs for tourism (Cotelco / Anato framing).
  3. Tourist-neighbourhood / foreigner pricing — El Poblado, walled Cartagena, English-first “experience” products, and prestige private lessons are priced for inbound demand, not for a local monthly course. Locals and residents complain loudly too — especially in Medellín (tourism + short-lets + housing pressure): e.g. El Colombiano, Semana, Infobae.
  4. Two markets in one city — menú del día, local group classes, TransMilenio/MIO can still be cheap; boutique hotels, private drivers, and “maestra” privates sit on another price list. Mixing the two without noticing is how “Colombia is cheap” and “this quote is absurd” both feel true.

Informal / forum discussion (load may fail; keep as pointer only): r/Colombia — ¿Por qué en Colombia todo es tan caro? (thread the user flagged — same themes: peso, inflation, tourist zones, digital-nomad demand). Prefer the press links above for anything you treat as fact.

Rough expectations (tourist mid-range, 2026)

Soft compilations (verify before relying):

Category Ballpark Notes
Daily mid-range (ex-flights) ~USD 90–160/day in big cities Higher in Cartagena tourist core — e.g. Latam Travellers 2026 city budgets
Hostel dorm often COP 35k–80k Tourist cities
Casual local meal COP 15k–35k Tourist-area restaurant often COP 35k–80k+ — Frugal Voyage COP table
Short app/taxi hop COP 10k–30k City-dependent
Local group salsa class often ~COP 12k–35k/class See Cali dance published tables
Staff private salsa 1h often ~COP 85k–100k Ricardo / SalsaPura / Sondeluz staff band
Prestige / “maestra” private 1h ~COP 180k (~USD 45) Sondeluz Luz brochure 12 Aug 2026 — ~2× staff; $ on flyer = COP

Colombia is no longer a bargain-bin destination by 2010s standards (City Paper); it can still be good value if you stay on the local price list and avoid English-menu / prestige packaging.

Dance private sanity check (Cali, Aug 2026)

From published / WhatsApp figures on Dance → Cali:

Source ~1h private Soft GBP
Salsa en Conexión (site) 100,000 COP ~£19–20
SalsaPura (site, cash) 100,000 COP ~£19–20
Sondeluz staff brochure 85,000 COP (~$21 on site) ~£16–17
Sondeluz “Maestra Luz” brochure 180,000 COP (~$45) ~£34–36
Mariana / Sabor de Cali (site USD) ~USD 15 ~£12

For a UK visitor these are cheap, not a rip-off — the trap is reading brochure $85.000 as dollars. Luz is a prestige tier (~2× staff) and still fine value in GBP. If a Cali private is well above ~COP 200k/h without a clear reason, then ask what you’re buying.
