Bogotá¶
Default: don’t rent for city use. Traffic, potholes, parking, and pico y placa make self-drive exhausting; TransMilenio / taxis / apps are the normal toolkit (BESABINE, Colombia Move).
When a car might still make sense¶
- Multi-stop day trips into Cundinamarca / Boyacá (e.g. toward Villa de Leyva or Zipaquirá + further towns) if you dislike tour vans — still weigh a hired driver.
- Pickup at El Dorado (BOG) only if leaving the city same day toward the mountains.
Wedding / Usaquén base days: no car.
Providers (Bogotá-specific notes)¶
- Localiza has El Dorado / city presence; Bogotá reviews include pico y placa friction (wrong “exempt” advice, paperwork not filed for permits) — ask in writing which days the plate can circulate (Agencias de Viajes opinions).
- International desks at BOG: fine as backup; expect higher rates.
Practical¶
- Prefer enclosed parking overnight — not street.
- Don’t plan to “just drive around” La Candelaria / peak TransMilenio corridors for fun.
